Overview
The role was critical to positioning WA competitively on the global screen stage, attracting major productions, and delivering economic growth for the state’s creative industries. Beyond operational leadership, the CEO needed to translate government-backed infrastructure into a commercially viable, internationally recognised studio, shaping strategy, culture, and partnerships from the ground up.
The Challenge
The search commenced while the studios were still under construction. Western Australia was entering a highly competitive global market dominated by established studios in Australia and internationally. The role required a visionary leader capable of transforming a government-backed infrastructure project into a commercially viable, internationally recognised production hub.
Our Approach
EP Australia conducted a global executive search, activating networks across Hollywood, the UK, Australia, and Asia. We engaged senior studio executives, producers, and infrastructure leaders, positioning the role as a rare opportunity to build and lead a studio from inception. The search engaged 77 senior candidates across five continents.
Criteria for Success
The successful candidate needed proven experience in studio leadership or large-scale screen production, strong international industry relationships, and the ability to operate at the intersection of government, global production, and commercial delivery.
Outcomes
Tom Avison was appointed as the inaugural CEO, bringing immediate international credibility and deep industry expertise. His leadership has positioned Perth Film Studios as a serious global contender, supporting major productions and contributing significantly to Western Australia’s creative economy.
