Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Director (ED), Industry & Audience Development is part of an executive leadership team that sets strategy, designs programs and policy, manages risk and governance, gives direction to Screen Queensland (SQ) and agrees priorities for performance and delivery to position the organisation as a driver of excellence and innovation in preparing the state for an ambitious future.

The role is responsible with the CEO, and Executive Leadership Team to plan, develop and implement, or partner on statewide programs to support capacity building and skills development for the Queensland screen sector, focusing on building a strategic framework to support both above and below the line practitioners. It also oversights the management of SQ Studios (SQS) in Brisbane and Cairns, develops screen culture and audiences through the Industry Partnerships team that celebrates stories and storytellers.
  
Focus Areas
  
Build a coordinated statewide approach to screen pathways.

  • Enhance collaboration across the screen training ecosystem to develop a coordinated approach for Screen Queensland’s involvement in skills innovation and opportunity to enhance career pathways and address critical workforce shortages.

  • Provide high-level strategic advice on, and develop goals and priorities for, SQ’s work in devising, managing and measuring the impact and outcomes of SQ’s above-the-line and below-the-line training initiatives and investments.
  • Manage SQ’s strategic partnerships with industry, guilds, and associations, educational institutions, state and national screen agencies, and government on shared initiatives to address skills shortages across the screen sector ensuring local and regional access and relevance.
  
Industry Development
  • Liaise with education providers and relevant bodies for the purpose of developing better foundations skills and training, above and below the line, for the Queensland screen sector.

  • Support workforce development, with a focus on expanding career pathways for crew and dismantling barriers to entry.

  • Champion skills training, grow local talent pipelines, and create opportunities for practitioners and emerging creatives across the breadth of Queensland’s screen ecosystem.
  • Work with SQ Studios to build out their role as screen educational partners and precincts.

  • Manage industry and training pathways programs in partnership with Screen Queensland creatives, including attachments, traineeships, writers’ rooms, SQ Hub that grow the Queensland screen ecosystem and increase screen professional development opportunities.

  • Develop frameworks to track skills and crew avails to support production demands in the state.
SQ Studio (SQS) Management
  • Support SQS in the development of a studio business and marketing plan that relies on attracting production and the sale of stage rentals as the core revenue stream.

  • Develop a strategy for studio value added services that leverages strong industry, education and government partnerships for example, building SQS as an educational precinct that addresses career pathways and critical workforce shortages.
  • Oversight the risk management framework for the operations of the studios ensuring compliance with relevant legislation factoring best practice health and safety procedures.
Industry Partnerships
   
With the opportunities of Brisbane 2032 at the forefront of planning, the goal is to invest in the delivery of a screen culture program that strengthens Queensland’s cultural calendar, develops audiences for screen culture content and positions Queensland as an innovative and inclusive screen destination.
  • Proactively identify and secure new partnerships, drive growth and create win-win agreements with current and future stakeholders within Queensland.
  • Create partnerships proposals and associated collateral to position Screen Queensland as an attractive partnership opportunity,
  • Deliver opportunities for Queensland audiences to see and experience quality screen content and innovative practice.
  • Optimise SQ’s funding and measure success and impact from investments.
  • Connect Queenslanders with multiplatform screen content.
  
  Key Relationships
  
This key industry educational leadership role is accountable for managing stakeholder relationships with
  • Industry partners, local production companies, inbound productions and industry guilds,
  • Government partners including Arts Queensland, Department of Education, Small Business and Training (DESBT), Jobs Queensland (JQ) and Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), local councils.
  • Education, training and pathway partners and providers (tertiary and private)
  • Screen Australia, SPA, Ausfilm, ACCTA and associated state screen agencies.
  • Statewide screen culture and event partners.
  
Skills and Experience
The incumbent will have a minimum of ten years’ experience in education, learning and development or training leadership roles with a strong focus on risk and governance. Experience in the screen, arts and creative industries is preferred.
  • Experience in a leadership role that demonstrates the ability to lead program leaders and executives and use influence to ensure outcomes.
  • High levels of business acumen, commercial skills, and strong strategic and project management skills.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the screen and/or arts industry, the key players, practitioners, upcoming talent and trends, and contemporary issues with a particular lens on developing skills, training and workforce planning.

  • An understanding of strategic business development and project planning, with the ability to think innovatively about these in a changing environment.

  • Demonstrable ability to analyse and interpret narrative and financial data, with high attention to detail and commitment to following process.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills; and demonstrable experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, delivering to deadlines and budgets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with exceptional interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to represent Screen Queensland to industry with diplomacy, sensitivity, confidentiality and tact as required.
  • Proven ability to actively contribute to, participate in and maintaining a positive, collaborative team environment and workplace.
  • Tertiary qualifications in education, learning and development and/ or creative industries preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide high-level strategic advice to CEO to develop goals, strategies, and priorities for the organisation; set and drive clear creative strategy for SQ.
  • Create partnerships and alliances, across the Australian screen ecosystem to build capacity and capability of Queensland’s screen and games sector.
    Develop in demand skills for the future that grow opportunities for Queensland-based talent and screen industry workforce.
  • Shares, seeks and analyses creative ideas, suggestions and data to inform the delivery of services. Upholds integrity through responsible decision making and management of policies and guidelines to maintain key standards.
  • Holds responsibility for compliance and governance frameworks for decision making while ensuring guidelines, policies and impact frameworks are up-to-date, relevant and outcomes
  • Establish and lead the new Industry & Audience Development team within Screen Queensland and collaborate across the organisation in setting strategy and priorities for the division that ensure it works effectively and cohesively towards clear goals and work in the spirit of a strong team culture.
  • Develop a strategic approach to screen culture and creative industry partnerships activities that balances audience outcomes and links to Brisbane 2032 opportunities.
  • Oversight the management of SQ Studios balancing revenue targets, industry value-add and compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Maintain positive relationships with a range of stakeholders including the Screen Queensland Board, Arts Queensland and relevant contacts in the Queensland Government.
  • Advocating organisational vision, goals, and policy, in particular SQ’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and gender equity.
